Yes Mandie, I guess I too have noticed the difference in my hair and seem to be feeling the difference in my skin now also. I take about a tablespoon of oil mixed in a smoothie in the morning and have been doing so for about a month. In another 2 months or so I hope to see and feel more benefits and plan to then get a full medical to measure any changes in my body organs. I also take Spirilina. Cheers Tom

Paulo, please google "BudWig's Diet." The correct ratio should be 2 table spoons of cottage cheese (no more than 2% fat) to 1 table spoon of Flax seed oil.
Or if taking flax seed oil by itself you can take 2 teaspoons a day. Once in the morning and once at in the evening.

I am currently undergoing breast cancer treatment and began taking flax seed oil with cottage cheese. I also discovered that the flax seed oil benefits me because I had seizures related to menopause; which then resulted in being put on hormones. The hormones then unfortunately caused breast cancer. But the upside is that the flax seed oil ended most of the seizures; which were very minor. As well read about Dr. Budwig's diet developed in Germany. She cured many people naturally from her diet everything from heart disease to cancer. And she cured incurable cancer. Flax seed oil is a great thing! I feel better and am able to tolerate the treatments more easily now. If you want to prevent cancer diabetes and heart disease or treat menopause without hot flashes give it a try.

it is interesting to have a look at the studies and conclusions of Dr.Johanna Budwig as it relates to the benefits of flax oil . Her studies were centered around Otto Warburgs findings of the root cause of cancer, she supplimented his studies by searching for a method to help the body absorb the nutrients in flax oil at the cellular level, she accomplished a great deal and the results of her studies has saved many from a long and painful battle with cancer.. search for more information

A nutritionist told me to put a drop of flax oil in my eye each night for about six months to get rid of cataracts. Has anyone ever tried this? If so, does it work?

I never heard of putting the drops in the eye for cataracts, as a kid our parents at that time would put the seed in the eye to flush out trash in the eye. it worked.
Now i have cataracts and i am looking for a natural way to get rid of them. I will try it . After all, what can i loose? Thanks, i will report back on the progress.

I have been adding flax seed oil to my german shepherds food twice a day for the last month. Every spring he starts scratching from his very dry skin. The groomer recommended flax seed oil added to his food so I do this every spring. The scratching has subsided considerably. I have also notice he seems to be moving better and running faster than his normal speed for his size and age so I'm guessing it is also lubricating his joints. I buy the tablets and puncture them with a tack and then sqeeze it on his food. Once the weather warms up and he is swimming on a regular basis his skin is never dry. Im going to start taking the flax seed oil tablets myself to see if it helps to lubricate my joints.

I take a Flax seed oil/Evening Primrose oil combinaton. It helps my mood but it moves my bowels all day. When you manage a restaurant it's a bit inconvenient. I will need to find a balance. My mood is better. I'm 54 and beginning menopause. Morning depression was very bad.

The capsules are so much more convenient. Or sprinkle seeds over salad. No need for boiling water.

Please make sure to grind the seeds before taking as the seeds are not easily digested. Secondly, flax seed oil is to be kept cold as it loses it's property and nutritional value when heated. The best way to take it is straight from the bottle about two teaspoons a day.  Remember that it must always be kept refrigerated and used within three weeks after opening because it will spoil after that.
Another way to take it is with  cottage cheese. ( ratio 2 table spoons cottage cheese to 1 table spoon flax oil.  You can use 4 table spoon cottage cheese to 2 table spoon flax oil or even 6:3.  The ratio is always 2:1.Please see Budwig Diet - Flaxseed Oil and Cottage Cheese

why is flaxseed oil not recommended for breast-feeding moms?
HerbWisdom's avatarHerbWisdom
Thanks for your enquiry. Please find the following safety info for Flaxseed Oil:

Although one small pilot study of breast-feeding women showed no adverse effects in infants whose mothers took flaxseed oil, pregnant and breast-feeding women are not advised to use flaxseed or flaxseed oil. Potentially, the unpredictable estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects may affect developing babies before and immediately after birth. In addition, the possible effects of flaxseed or flaxseed oil for young children have not been studied, so their use is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

I take flaxseed oil at night with a lean protein shake - it keeps you full during the night and is a great source of essential MUFA oils... Including Omega-6 and Lignens.

I sprinkle ground flaxseed on rice (1 cup brown rice and 1 tablespoon wild rice) for an early dinner.  I try to minimize carbs in the afternoon but consume carbs in the morning after strenght training.

HI. i have crohn's disease. and i was told to try flax seed oil as it helps with inflammation. i will try anything at this point because i dont want the invasive surgery. but like the rest of you i don't know how much to take so i am taking 1 every day to start. i didnt know till i read this article not to take it with other meds so i will take it like it says 2 hours after my crohn's meds.
Shivamatt's avatarShivamatt
You should note that the cancer-fighting lignans are only found in whole flaxseed and *not* flaxseed oil as stated in the article.  Otherwise, good info.  I use it, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice as a light dressing for salads every day.  It has a very "filling" quality that make my salads very satisfying.

Thank you for your feedback. I have now updated the article.

A guy at the health food store where I shop said  the ground flaxseed is better than the oil. Why?
HerbWisdom's avatarHerbWisdom
Thanks for your enquiry. Whole flaxseeds contain Lignan and fiber whereas the oil only contains alpha-linolenic acid (Omega 3 oils), hence the whole seeds are better unless you just want to take a spooonful of Omega 3.
Robert Patterson's avatarRobert Patterson
Flax seeds need to be ground just before use to be of benefit.  It you want Omega 3 use chia seeds which don't need to be ground. Flax seeds need to be refrigerated. I just started using the oil.  Flax and soy is good for osteoporosis. Slows down the break down of bone.

WOW... I can tell you that Flaxseed oil rocks! ... I have been suffering a very debilitating lower back pain for months, all due to a protrusion in my lower vertebrae!.. I have done the GP's / Physios / Cat scans etc etc.. and I can tell you I have been testing out different prescribed and over the counter anti inflamitories - this lower back pain was really debilitating and was aging me as I have been unable to walk or sit down properly, all due to lower back inflammation. Most of these meds seems to be drying me out, my skin, going to the toilet etc..! ..  In the last 3 days I have been taking cold pressed Flaxseed oil 10,000mg's day1 and again day2. Last night I slept the whole night and woke without pain. My whole body feel different - Im totally convinced that my recovery has to be down to Flaxseed oil.

Flax oil if taken along with cottage cheese ,helps cure cancer for definite. The final outcome depends on other factors like juicing, fruits and vegetables, sunlight. There are studies where people were given flax oils directly. In certain cases desired results were not seen in somes aggravated.

I've been giving my 7 yr old daughter 1 teaspoon of flaxseed oil stirred in a glass of apple juice with her breakfast every morning for a few months now and it has made a distinct improvement to the appearance of her trunk which is afflicted with pityriasis lichenoides (PLC, PLEVA) lesions. She likes the taste too! I will continue to use this as her skin is less dry and less inflamed looking.

I'm sure this is TMI, but I'm not the most "regular" gal on the block. As a gastric bypass surgery patient, I am prone to constipation. I also take iron and calcium supplements which exacerbate things quite a bit.

When I mentioned this to one of my doctor's nurses, she recommended the Fiber Cleanse from Lady Soma products. It was very easy to use; I just take with a glass of water once a day.

Most importantly, this stuff works!! I find it's better to take it on a regular basis, rather than waiting to get constipated and then taking it. I feel good taking it every day because I know it is all natural, and it keeps me nice and regular.

Are there any adverse effects when taking Ramipril for lowering blood pressure and eating other blood pressure lowering foods at the same time such as flaxseed? Im 31 and have been taking Rampril for 6 months but would also like to combine more natural methods. Could combining them reduce the blood pressure to dangerously low levels? Emma Colbert

My son was taken off the asthma meds with just taking the oil and garlic for the respiratory infection, now 15 years old and no need for meds, natural is the best way without the need of side affects and wasting so much money on prescriptions that all they do is get you sicker in the long and don't cure

angie's avatarangie

Patty,
I am a sever asthmatic, I suffered for 5 years. I had pnemonia 4 to 5 times a year with pluersiy.. In Nov. 2011 I was offered an austrailian shepard pup. well, I took him despite.. I started walking 3-7 miles a day at a park close to my home. winter, spring summer and fall. No asthma. I took my time walking and breathing and speaking positive that I had to be calm and get rid of stress. train my puppy and make him a therapy dog. then i got a clean bill of health for one full year. I do however have ecsema and the flax seed cleared it up in 2 days.

Great site, glad I found it. Among other ingredients for inflammation and omega3's, I have added flaxseed to a green smoothie recipe that also includes a small amount of fresh ginger. I noticed under the side effects section for flaxseed it states "not to take flaxseed with ginger"... can you shed light on why these 2 should not be consumed together? Thanks!

angie's avatarangie

ginger is used for stomachs aches and flaxseed is high in fiber. I think they would work against eachother. flaxseed. is very gentle and digests slowly so that the insulin levels dont elevate but keep them level.. It also helps the food digest completely.

Just finished taking predisone.I have dry skin just started taking hormones.Hope the flaxseed oil will get rid of my dry skin and dry hair! I have done research now waiting for results and I will keep in touch.

I had been on prednisone for 1 full year. I have been off of it for One full year now.
I have excema and it gets bad plus I have asthma.. Changing my diet has helped emmensely and so I hope that you continue the flax seed.. Chia is also a great one to add it has the magnesium in it where the Flax seed has the potasium and 5 grams of the fiber... I use the seeds the flax I crush and the chia i just use the whole seed. but you can put them in smoothies with a Banana and silk almond milk.. 2 tbs of flax and 1 tbs of chia.. I also put it in my yogurt. I have to tell you my skin is looking amazing and I am not waking up swollen.. So good luck. I hope maybe you will try the way I use it.. it tastes real good..

I take one flaxseed oil capsule 1250 mg. a day and no more dry eyes! My boyfriends opthomalogist told him it would help with wearing contacts and it does! Other benefits I am noticing also but since that was the one I was looking for I can say, yes, it truly does alleviate dry eye symptoms!

angie's avatarangie

I have just recently have been on the aikens diet.. my son is also on this diet. but It left me with forgetting everything and no energy. I lost 15 pounds but I dont have energy to exercise and so I started investigating.. and started a new way of life with quonia, and millet for good carbs with lots of veggies and then I read about Flax seed and chia seeds. so I am making a smoothie in the morning with Flax seed crushed 2 tablespoons and 1 tablespoon of chia seeds.. before dinner. I add the same amount to yogurt. I have so much energy and my memory.... I can walk in a room and remember why I am there. I can finish my tasks completely and I feel fantastic. I dont eat red meat and I am not to fond of fish.. So I find it amazing that these 2 ingredients, changed almost immediately in my system. My son had a singnifcant amount of weight to lose and I did it along with him for support. but I want it as a life style of eating since cancer, skin problems, rheumitiod arthirtus, Raynauds and TMJ and heart desease all are in our family.

Hi, I know exactly what you are talking about! I have been using the J. Budwig diet and protocol with no deviations for the last 17 days. It's a wonderful diet / system of healing but yes, it has made a boil and many areas of skin eruptions on my face. It could be detox, could be over- sensitivity to the flax oil( I use freshly pressed Barleans) whatever, I am giving the diet a one month trial then deciding whether to continue. I do not suffer from skin problems, so this is striking.

Sibraa's avatarSibraa

I've taken flaxseed oil on and off for approx 20 years, the best way to take it is a spoonful with a little hot water and lemon chaser. Also if you have never taken it before, it is best to start with a small dose, like a tea spoon a day for a few days/ week, then build up to what ever amount you need or want to take. The reason for this is the first thing it does is cleanse or detox your kidneys and liver, so if you have any toxins at all, it will make you feel a little nauseous at first if you take too much to begin with, so build up over 2 weeks or so. I did have some fabulous research from Europe but can't seem to find it and it had the symptom and how many days it took for flaxseed oil to regulate or fix the problem, I do have a lot of knowledge about this and would recommend to anyone and everyone from depression to cancer. Great natural product!
