I had the same problem wit lisnoapril before i left the hospital. They had me on 14 med's now I'm down to 6 meds. .When I got home I started doing my own research on all of the meds my doctor gave me. Lisnoapril what was making me sick all the time I stopped taking it all together. Then I started looking at natural herbs. to replace what i stopped taking. I found that hawthorn berries was the answer. that was 5 years ago. now I take more herbs.Thank You God for leading me to the Truth about natural Herbs.

I made up a list of all my med's and herbs on the computer. so when i have to go to the doctors office he gets a copy of what I'm taking.
a few years ago i was on medicare in Michigan they sent me to midwest health clinic.

the doctor looked at the list of med's and herbs for a minute.
looked me in the eye and said why are you waisting your time and money buying this CRAP.
That was it I got up and walked out of his office and I have not been back since.

Doctor only believe in what the AMA say's they have no time to do their own research. They care more about what goes into their pockets than anything else $$$$$.$$$. Apparently he is full of Crap.

I feel great,I do have Congestive Heart failure. high blood pressure and am a diabetic.

I had 3 stents put in in Dec 2010. They put me on Lisinopril, Toprol XL and some other meds. I felt worse after the stents than I did before. I was pretty sure it was the meds, so I quit them one at a time to see if there was any improvement (BTW I don't recommend this approach....when I stopped the Toprol XL cold turkey my BP was all over the place). In any case, it seemed to me that Lisinopril was the culprit and I have now replaced it with Hawthorn. Too early to see if it's going to help but will keep you posted. I'm starting on 300mg per day. If anyone has a suggested dosage I would appreciate hearing from you.

Make sure it is the Standardized hawthorn Extract (which comes from the leaves and flowers) rather than just the berries. (it is ok to have the berries too, but the leaves and flowers are important). As far as dosage, start at 300mg/day and work up from there. HOWEVER - do not take hawthorn with any beta blockers (like toprol XL or any other beta blocker) - there could be bad interaction between the two. Also - going off the beta blocker should be a gradual process of tapering off the dosage gradually over a 10-14 day period. Going cold turkey is very dangerous.

Joseph. T 's avatar Joseph. T 05/03/2014 22:42

You are 100% wrong. To get full benefit one must get the "Berry" form which contains the whole herb. And dosage should be between 15 -20mg's per kilogram of body weight. Much higher than 300mg's a day. Wait 6-8 weeks to see full benefit.

google kilogram to pound. or use this ratio: 1 K = 2 lb (it's really 2.2 lb, but 2 is close enough). just divide it by two for your answer. so 15-20 mg/kg ~ 7.5-10 mg/lb

By that I mean by using the plants and natural substances he put on this earth for us to use to keep ourselves healthy. (NOT trying to bible thump you...lol). Hi Laurie. Hope you're still checking in here from time to time. I too was on a Beta Blocker. In my case, for 20 years. I ended up gaining a ton of weight, was in pain most of the time with both muscles and joints, among a host of other problems. I was also diagnosed with Type II diabetes in 2008. Recently, I decided I was tired of being sick and tired so took my healthcare into my own hands and started researching medications I was on to see what, if anything, was causing my issues. I came across the information I have linked to below. I am now in the process of titrating off the beta blocker and am ramping up on the herbs, including hawthorn. I already feel a million times better. Hope this article gives you some good insight. http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/117/20/2706

Interested in the nettle as I have this problem during the day as I have had prostate cancer for about 12 years. I also take Hawthorn for my heart. They wanted to take me in the same day I had my test to insert a stent. That was 18 months ago & I avoided the stent & the load of drugs prescribed & have got back to a 3 1/4 mile bike ride without any problems. I should say I'm 83!

Hi, this is 70 yo w/f - been taking Hawthorn Berries Extract 141 mg. std. to 1.8% Vitexin with additional 424 mg. Hawthorn included in the same capsule for about 12 years. Began taking this after congestive heart failure secondary to viral myocarditis @ that same time. This all followed an ablation of SVT. As of today, my BP is completely normal, as is my heart function (perfect output) Never have taken subsequent BP meds or any sort of cardiac meds. Very thankful God for this. Hope this info. is helpful to someone. Thank you.

I've noticed several posts by folks who are going cold turkey off of their medications for high blood pressure. PLEASE, especially those of you who are on Beta Blockers, DON'T just stop cold turkey. I know you want this crap out of your system, but you have to stop these meds slowly or you can have potentially dangerous, even life threatening issues come up. You can start taking the Hawthorn now, take it for a couple of weeks and then start reducing your dose of the pharmaceutical. You should always do this with your physician's help if possible, but PLEASE don't just stop cold turkey!

D Nelson 's avatar D Nelson 02/11/2011 22:31

Actually DON'T start taking the Hawthorn until you are off the Beta Blocker. There could be dangerous interactions between the two. But, yes - get off the beta blocker slowly (gradually reduce the amount taken each day over a 10-14 day period). I have been on two BP medications that have been giving me horrible side effects that have become progressively worse over the years - one a Beta Blocker, the other an Ace inhibiter. I am gradually tapering off the beta blocker over a two week period, but maintaining taking the Ace Inhibiter. Once off the beta blocker I will start taking the Hawthorn. Once I see a stable BP (when I find the right dosage of Hawthorn), I will eliminate the Ace inhibiter and add CoQ10 and Allicin (the key component found in garlic).

On what basis do you warn about hawthorn/beta blocker interaction. As yet I can find no contrindications, but am not about to attempt both until I do.

This is what Dr. Christopher Hobbs has to say about this matter (important I think):

According to Stargrove et al., 2008, no interactions
between hawthorn and beta-blockers are to be expected, based on 5 clinical trials (p. 100).

Hawthorn works well for my blood pressure, but can it harm my eyesight> I have had problems with my eyes and am not sure if they are due to the hypertension medicines I used to take or if hawthorn is mimicking their effects - as it is also a vasodilator - and if it is harming my eyes.

My eye doctor told me that the High blood pressure causes issues with the blood vessels in the eyes. I had been prescribed Lisinopril, but it made me cough. My doctor switched me to Diovan which then made me retain water even with the HCT (water pill) and my joints ached. So I quit taking it (and it was expensive) The Eye doctor told me to take Fish oil capsules twice a day. It helps everything from your head to your toes (including the eyes) He also told me that it is important to take the BP meds in the morning b/c lower BP during the day was good, but the eye vessels need the higher pressure at night. About a month ago, I switced to the Hawthorn Berries and feel so much better as far as my Blood Pressure and other circulation issues. I did see a report about Green Coffee Bean Extract that is supposed to be better for Blood Pressure issues, but have not tried it yet. Oh, 1 tsp of Apple Cider vinegar a day is good for Cholesterol levels--and many other things. Mix it in OJ or hold your nose and drink in a small glass of water.

Yes, Coffee Bean extract is actually better for high blood pressure than Hawthorn. There's a product by True Health called Ultimate BP that I think hits the nail on the head. They put in the Coffee Bean Extract along with Pomegranate and Grape-seed Extract, then went a step further by including K2 (as MK7) to address hardening of the arteries due to Calcium. This stuff really works. My wife was on lisinopril and just had all sorts of issues, she switched to Ultimate BP and her blood pressure now is absolutely perfect, her pain went away and we got our sex life back!

Never could take the apple cider vinegar well, until tried Braggs ACV w/ Ginger. I was seeking a good way to get Ginger, this has helped me. With diet and hi Omega 3 as well as the ACV/Ginger my triglyceride level is going down.

rao 's avatar rao 06/10/2014 19:04

One must dilute ACV(1:4) with water and take with 1/2 spoon of baking soda. The benefits will triple and great for Gout problem.

Mi Win 's avatar Mi Win 24/02/2015 21:26

im curious about this...acv/baking soda. doesn't one counteract the other? do you get stomach ache when you take it?

rao 's avatar rao 25/02/2015 00:10

For gout acv/ baking soda is recommened best treatment. In fact this combination is also extremely good for stomach upset case. It gives immediate relief.

Mi Win 's avatar Mi Win 25/02/2015 00:16

one more thing...do you mix the soda with the acv? or do you put the soda on your tongue, and down it with the acv/water mix?

rao 's avatar rao 25/02/2015 01:38

I normally mix 1 acv (with the mother) with 4 water and add I/4 of spoon baking soda just before drinking. It works great for me. Good luck.

Took about 2 months, last time I went to doctor it was down to about 120/80. Was also taking a lot of ibuprofen for aches and pains, but since started take these I think i have took only 2 total since then.

Kehl's post is now 4 yrs old...... but as someone already mentioned, take SEA SALT NOT TABLE SALT!!! Also be sure to drink LOTS of water throughout the day with the Sea Salt (APROX 1oz of water per 1lb of body weight per day).I dont recall the dosage of Sea Salt, but easy to google search. You can even find something on YouTube about the Sea Salt with Water Cure. I have been reading a lot over past 2 days about this since finding out my BP has gone up from 130 to 160 to 190 just in the past couple of months. I will be trying Hawthorn, Sea Salt & Water, and my Nutri-Blast mixture of about 7 vegs or fruits with potassium and Magnesium etc. I hope to lose 30 lbs and start exercising as well. After all that i have read, I feel confident this is the way to go. If it does not help i guess I will have to go for my first dr visit in 40yrs.

After reading extensively about herbs for HBP, I started taking Hawthorn 15 years ago; along with Valerian for anxiety attacks from reactions to MSG or too much salt eaten, and an increasing High Blood Pressure condition. Since beginning HBP medication, I still take the Hawthorne along with the medication and have good results. It really helps boost the prescription drug and gives me about 20 BP lower then just the drug itself.

I am an RN and I developed irregular heart rate a few years ago, my pulse would beat all day at 120-130 it made me exhausted, and running the long halls at work even harder on me. I took lopressor for a while but quit, I knew about hawthorn berry because I studied intensely in college as my minor herbal medicine, but I wanted to try other things because my learning was this herb was good for the BP control. I tried olive leaf, angelica, garlic and really not much there, good stuff but not what I needed. My BP was already normal, it was my pulse. I started on puritains pride hawthorn and took 2 capsules and so far my pulse is staying under a 100, but I am so tired I know it is because my pulse is now much lower and once I adjust it will be worth it.

I do inform my doctor as I am a medical professional and I know how important that info can be, but it's my choice in the end. It's good to provide the doctor with any research on the herb also this can help them learn.

After 3 or 4 months I was off all meds and my BP is around 127 over 67. I am now 78 yrs and feel 40. I am a believer.

My name is michael and I am 41. Have been having chest pains for years and would always have it when I smoked. I have since reduced my smoking by 90 percent. I recently bought hawthorn berry extract one day after seeing my cardiologist and within 3 days stopped having the chest pains. I cant still believe the power of this berry. I have a stress test due tomorrow and will report back shortly. My cardilogist did not tell me about hawthorn. I made my own research and bought it from amazon by doctor christopher.God left us everything to take care of ourselves but big companies will never let u know that. I must recommend this to any living human over 30 whether sick or ok because ur heart is ur engine.

I had four bypass operations in 2004 and never gave up to the Big Farma, surviving for ten years on natural medications.
The best hawthorn is found in a product called Cardio-FX from the People´s Chemist... I swear by it and it gave me a healthy life.

My mother is currently 68 yrs, and has already had two major heart attacks in 2010 with 90 % arterial blocks then. She is diabetic and has been on Olmesartan (Cancor), Nitrglycerin (Nitrocontin), Aspirin (Ecospirin), Atorvastatin and Clopidogrel for over a year. She started Crateagus Oxycanthus on 20 drops daily... and since 3 years on it. She is doing better on cholesterol.. I have stopped Atorvastatin 1 year before...Reduced the dosage of Aspirin and Cancor... But she has many side effects due to beta blockers on her rhumatic joint pains...

I wish I could stop all medications and let her continue only her Crateagus drops.. But her Homeo doctor is not willing to take the risk of asking her to stop the rest too.

Amy 's avatar Amy 25/08/2014 21:18

HBP...I think you mean half your weight in ounces of water (at least that is what I have been told and what I have read). So if you are 180 pounds, that would be 90 ounces (which is about 11 eight ounce glasses). The way you are saying it would put you at 180 ounces of water....way too much (that would be over 22 eight ounce glasses). I am trying the Himalayan Pink Salt in the water. I thought it was helping my BP, but I'm not sure. You may want to check with your Dr if yours is consistently as high as you mentioned. My Dr is very good about trying to bring it down naturally. I am to report back in 6 months (after seeing him after the first 6 weeks). He did say to come back earlier if I was consistently in the high 140s.

I have only just come across details about the Hawthorn Plant and its many uses. I was reading about the Apparitions to maria (a south american mytic). While I was reading the article just now, she mentions that Christ appears to her and mentions that there will be a terrible illness that will come to little children and People should immerse Hawthorn Leaves into tea and give it to the children throughout the day and that will heal them. I had no idea after reading comments below that it had many uses. God Be Praised!!! Also while I am here I might add that if you are looking for Love Peace and Happiness read the messages (True Life In God) (The Poem of the Man God) Both freely available on the internet. These messages are healing. God Bless!!!

8Pi 's avatar 8Pi 07/08/2014 13:55

The comments indicate that too many people are using herbs as if they were pharmaceuticals. The approach is different. Dosages are not increased, for example. Length of time taken. It is necessary to learn about the herbs being considered, not just take a clue from a tv show or some such. I'd say this is a bad website as there is no herb-wise moderator. Just as it is important to know how a pharmaceutical can affect physiology before agreeing to take it, it is important to study a particular herb and how it works. Besides - it's a different philosophy. I've used them for decades, and am still studying.

I am very interested in advice and suggestions from y'all, especially D. Nelson, as you seem to "know your stuff." Let me share my background with this quick: I am 54 years old. Over the last several years I have been diagnosed with a-fib. Not severe for the most part; in fact, other than "heart farts" as I call them, (sorry, LOL, it's the little temporary skipping that occurs) I have only gone into full-blown a-fib 5 times in the last 7 years. Three times I was cardioverted and sent home, no biggie. My cardiologist put me on Fleccanide and coreg for about 18 months or so, and 4 baby aspirin a day. Then after I quit smoking my BP dropped so low, he had me stop all meds immediately except for the baby aspirin. I still had the occasional little heart farts, and then about a week ago, after eating a sausage that I knew dang well not to eat, I went back into full-blown a-fib. Stupidly I had also started smoking again (and am stopping again-please God for good this time!) He had me take my meds again and 24 hours later my heart went back into rhythm on its own. I saw him the next day and he put me on this hideous new blood thinner called Xarelto instead of the aspirin. It makes me so dizzy and light-headed and queasy that I am uneasy even about driving. I have a call into him today to discuss it. But I hate being on these meds and started doing research for healthy alternatives; that's how I found this site. Any and all suggestions, advice, etc will be welcomed. I grew up in California where we have lots of homeopaths, not so here in Georgia; most people I have asked don't even know what it is! So can you help?? God bless y'all and thanks!

I have a prolapsed heart valve, and because of this suffer from arrhythmia. I take hawthorn as tea. I pick it from the hedgerows and keep it frozen in a container. I use leaves and berries both ripe and unripe. When I use it I have no heart arrhythmia symptoms. And it also makes me feel more relaxed. I think that's because when you have arrhythmia you often feel as if you are in a state of flight or fright.

I also make fruit leather with the berries. I make it into little flat squares and keep it in an air tight container and then have one inch square a day, which has the same effect as the tea.

For over 40 years, I have suffered with severe water retention in my lower legs and feet. I had had numerous ultrasounds done to see if there was blockage, and there was none. My veins in my legs were just not working. I had pitting edema everyday after 4 hours of rising. Well, by chance I stared taking some Hawthorne Berry pills, and within 3 weeks--the edema is gone. The "bulges" of water in my legs have gone. I am morbidly obese, but am now able to move and walk more without the breathlessness that I used to have. So happy to have discovered Hawthorne.

I had been diagnosed with afib. and put on metoprolol, digoxin and warfarin. Had side effects from both digoxin and warfarin, and ended up back in hospital with a heart rate of 27. they said over medicated. I was off everything for four days and put on lower doses. Still had problems with digoxin and war. Started looking on my own, as the Heart Dr. said, " your body will get use to it, keep taking them."
I had thankfully been healthy all my life and allergic to some drugs over the years that had been prescribed, so I knew to look elsewhere. I found recommendations online by Dr. Sinatra and others for Hawthorn Berry.I took it into my Heart Dr. he fired me.
At the time I couldn't walk past five houses and back without being out of breath. Previously to Afib. I was walking 2 to 3 miles a day. On May 20th,2011 I started taking two Hawthorn B. one morning, one in the eve ( 250mg extract 250mg leaf) by July I was walking a mile a day and quit the warfarin. and went to Natto Plus.
I have a new Heart Dr. I had a stress test in Nov. passed with flying colors. No sign of Afib. and the Dr said,( he didn't know too much about what I was taking and he was going to check into it. But would I take a baby aspirin a day too. I told him no problem. My next appointment with him is next fall, and I'm 75 yrs. young and again walking two or so miles a day, Thank God, Helen in Venice, Fl

I believe the potential issue with taking Hawthorn Berries with meds such as beta blockers is just that both lower blood pressure, so you may be on too high a dose of beta blockers if you're also taking Hawthorn Berries so your blood pressure could end up too low.

I picked hawthorn berries in the autumn, covered them in vodka, and left them to stew in the sunshine on my windowsill for three or four weeks. Then decanted filtered liquid into a bottle. I have been taking a little less than a teaspoon twice a day just before meals, the added bonus of which it prepares my stomach for food, so indigestion significantly reduced. My husband takes capsules, but we seem to have had the same improvement in quality of life and ability to exercise more than before.

Hi, I'm Roy G
I was told that if medications are on your chart & that if for some reason you are placed in the hospital, they will administer all of your meds so you need to have meds that you have discontinued removed from your chart because if they start to administer all of your meds and your body is not used to all of them at once that will not be a good situation.

Mi Win 's avatar Mi Win 24/02/2015 21:30

I am 33 years old. My blood pressure use to be around 142/96 (average). My doctor tried several types of bp meds. There was always a side effect. After researching Hawthorn Berry, I am now off of bp meds.
I have been taking Hawthorn Berry for about 6 months now. I first began consuming what the directions called for, 1 capsel 3 times a day. In doing that I began to get heart palvatations. A person working at a health food place suggest that I lessen the dosage. I now take it once a day in the mornings. I also run the treadmill 30mins a day at least 3 times a week and I stick to low sodium foods.
I am now experiencing low blood pressure. I think it worked to well. Maybe 111/81 bp is ok for me? i am exhausted all day though. i think i will now try taking Hawthorn Berry everyother day now.

The constituents of hawthorn should not have this effect. You don't say what else you're taking, or how you arrived at "normal dosage."

That is right, I am 45 years old and have been taken hawthorn berry for four months and never had a lobido problem. BP was very high due to anxiety, my doctor placed me on Amlodipine Besylate 5MG tablets 1 a day. My daughter told me to try hawthorn berry instead. I was not too sure about using the herbal supplement but I gave it a try starting with 565MG twice a day with food.To my surprise it worked well, my B P is back to normal, never took the prescription. My doctor told me to keep taken the medication because it is working not knowing it is hawthorn berry instead.I will keep taking the hawthorn berry.I have noticed my sex life is even better and I am exercising a lot now.

Do tell the doctor that you're taking the hawthorn and not the prescription medication.

My doctor was informed of the hawthorn berry and I was told to continue taking it with the Amlodipine Besylate, this will help control my B P. Thanks for the reply.

Can Hawthorn be taken with Linisopryl (my blood pressure med) active in my system.

Drgnfli48 's avatar Drgnfli48 07/04/2011 01:49

Hawthorn can be taken safely with Lisinopril, just watch your blood pressure carefully lest it should get too low. Remember, herbs take time, so relax and let it do it's job.

not a good idea to take coumadin and hawthorn together...both thin the blood, and may make bleeding a problem (shaving, abrasions, ulcers).

If you take hawthorn daily, does it build up in your body?

had 3 stents put in in Dec 2010.

Does anybody have any experience of withdrawal symptoms when changing from hypertension medication to herbs such as hawthorn?

I went see a Shaman time ago and he recommended that i drink hawthorn tea about 3-4x a day becuase he sensed something about my heart. He also mentioned the dangers of smoking for me, tho i smoke regular, 6-8 cigs a day and lots of the wacky kind** I drink it like a beverage, my chest pains, lil bouts of panic hypochondria about my haert or palpitations is gone, drink it everyday.
