Psyllium Husk Reviews (Plantago Psyllium)

I used Psyllium for cholesterol control. Eating oatmeal nearly every day for breakfast didn't help. Adding to that regimen a heaping teaspoon of Psyllium husk for a year lowered my total cholesterol by 32 points. I take the Psyllium an hour or so before the evening meal. I continue to use it to see the effects of the second year.

To start the day on a top note try this for a delicious breakfast - mix 3 tspns psyllium husk with 1/2 cup water, add 1/2 cup tinned fruit salad and 1/2 cup yoghurt. Wash it down with large glass water.

Sorry, I accidently hit the wrong key!!  I was saying that I agree with most here in this forum Psyllium Husk is great for helping with many things including cholesterol and regularity. One thing I will recommend for someone who might consider taking it, is to drink plenty of water or liquids after. In fact I've found it less "bloating" if you drink a glass of water 15 minutes before taking a spoonful in 8oz of liquid. Another thing that has helped me tremendously to avoid the "bloating effect" is to NOT sit or be stationary after drinking it.  A long walk does wonders! Good luck.

I take a table spoon of Psyllium with miso soup or with porridge two to three times a day. Its really good for helping lose weight.
I lost 7kg over 5 weeks but i also cut down carbs and trained with weights 3 times a week.
Apparently Psyllium helps maintain testosterone levels for men...always a good thing!

I find that Psyllium is a wonderful additive.  Particularly when I sprinkle some on my air sandwiches, it adds a fibrous texture, just lovely.  My air sandwiches and water soup have never been so flavoursome.  Its a godsend.

Psyllium husks have been recommended to me for ibs - took my first 'dose' today & after reading the favourable comments, I'm looking forward to seeing if it works for me! Question though: It says on the tub to take 1-2 teaspoons in a glass of water, followed by another plain glass of water. I ended up drinking 2 pints of water (for some reason we only have big glasses in our house haha) & felt very bloated afterwards. Too much fluid?

Marcus, your reply does not make much sense, psyllium results do not occur "shortly after taking" moreover, psyllium is meant for drinking with (8oz) of water, and another glass of water thereafter, and not to be taken by eating a spoonful of it without fluid, it will cause the opposite of what you stated, that is to say "blockage of bowel movement"
Your reply is rather odd, and one has to ask the question WHY.

Psyllium kind of saved my life while i was in india and suffering
from never ending diahorrea for months. Later i realized it was due to the spices.
anyways, by then i had tried everything that western
medicine has to offer without much of an effect. When i came across
psyllium i was fine within a day.
So this is what the locals do: if they
want to get rid of constipation, they use it with warm milk or water. If
they want to stop diahorrea they mix it with cold joghurt.

its also very soothing to the stomach and intestinal walls, wich gave me a chance to recover from the aggressive spices.

People use it for general intestinal cleansing as well, wich is what i am experimenting with at the moment...

I have 2 tablespoons of psyllium with 15ml of chlorophyll + 2 tall glasses of green tea each morning and it really helps to cleanse the colon and stop me from being bloated! It tastes horrid but its worth it and it really makes you full before breakfast!

I used to suffer from constipation and was recommended psyllium husk.

It really solved my problem and I have been using it off and on for 10 over years now. The problem now is, my 5 year old grandson! Can anyone tell

me how much psyllium husk should be given to him to help him ease his constipation.

I ate never change diet always worked out a min. of 3 days a week.It workes! Really cleans you out!

Dani 's avatar  Dani 26/02/2013 02:30

I understand that this is a rather late response... but im taking psyillum husk while on the Jay Robb Fruit Flush Detox.. i have taken
16 ounces pure water, 2 rounded tablespoons high-quality natural whey isolate protein powder, 1 tablespoon organic non-GMO psyllium seed husks
4 times in one day.. Also drinking plenty of purified water with electrolytes..
I have not had a BM and wanting to know how long will it take for me to have the BIG SHOW.

Stooly 's avatar  Stooly 16/10/2012 14:44

From WEB MD : This medication
is used to treat constipation.
It increases the bulk in your stool, an effect that helps to cause movement of
the intestines. It also works by increasing the amount of water in
the stool, making the stool softer and easier to pass.

From : Psyllium soaks up a significant amount of
water in the digestive tract, thereby making stool firmer and, under these
circumstances, slower to pass.
One states it makes stool softer, one states it makes it firmer....100% opposite

Chumowski 's avatar  Chumowski 04/01/2013 07:22

If you have a really loose movement it will firm it up, if you are having difficulty with too hard movements it will soften, what it does is balance out the consistency if used regularly and at a dose that suits your body. As everyone is different no one dose is right for all and the timing of the dose needs to be consistent as well as your meal timings to have the best effect. What this will do is regulate your body's natural transition.

I use a tablespoon of psyllium in yoghurt once a day with breakfast. Once you have a bathroom visit you will feel 20 pounds lighter. I feel full for many hours. I found that I get much less acid reflux as well. I am 270 pounds at 6 feet tall. I was 300 pounds 6 months ago and I have done only the following, with no exercise. I stopped eating sugary foods and colas, I reduced the amount of salty and fast food, and I take psyllium everyday. I can not emphasize how well you will feel from your esophagus down to your escape hatch. I stand by using psyllium everyday. I recommend using the lightest colored type as they seem to have the most affect. Try it for 5 days in a row and you will be truly amazed at how light you will feel and all because the psyllium cleans everything out of you like a sponge! It also help your body by absorbing fats and not allowing your body to absorb it.

Hello - I'm from South Africa and have been using psyllium husk for a good couple of years. I am now in Canada in a city called Edmonton and unfortunately cannot seem to find the natural psyllium husk here. Its either in tablet form or in the Metamucil products but not pure and natural psyllium. Does anyone know where I can purchase this product in its most natural form?
please let me know.

HDL is healthy cholesterol. If psyllium reduced it, that's a problem. You want our HDL as high as possible. In fact there has never been a heart attack reported in all of medical history in any individual with HDL greater than 100.

Roderickjay29 's avatar  Roderickjay29 09/04/2012 16:34

My mistake, my LDL was at 44, HDL 78.

I have hated bran flakes all my life, with or without raisins, so guess what?

I tried the loose-pack psyllium first. It's cheaper and I had no problem with swallowing it, but it's messy and awkward to pack along on travels. So then I switched to the "Lady Soma Detox".  The packets of pills last for 7 days, and are an EXCELLENT psylium husk supplement. The capsules are convenient. Drink plenty of water! (But that's a good idea anyway.)

fartingmum 's avatar  fartingmum 29/11/2011 15:34

psyllium husk has actually increased my mum's flatulence instead of reducing it. haha, why do you think that is so?

I suffered with a pile for about a year, when that went i then suffered with anal fissures for nearly 2 years and i tried everything, creams, diet, high fibre foods, everything and the fissure would go then come back, go then come back, the pain was unbearable and i thought i would never see the day where the fissure would go.

3 months on since taking psyllium husk every morning, im a different person. The fissure healed in a week and has stayed healed for the longest time ive known in 2 years. This stuff is amazing. Ive always said that piles and fissures form because of dry, hard stools that are difficult to pass, they dont just 'form on their own' and the coating that psyllium husk provides make the bowel movement easy. The best thing about it for me (unlike using supplements to loosen stools like lactulose) is that it bulks the stool so when you go, you have gone for the day and dont feel like you need to go again for 24hrs.

I plan to take psyllium husk for the rest of my life and anyone suffering from anal fissures or piles should try this for a month or two. I found it takes a few days to get into your system but once it does it works.

BabyD 's avatar  BabyD 03/05/2011 02:40

Psyllium husk is amazing! Very cheap, I have the orange flavored powder.
it works wonders, cleans you out in less than a day you won't believe the VOLUME you... "go"... haha.

and it definitely makes you feel fuller.

I take two tablespoons a day in 16 oz. of water. just chug it down. tastes fine as long as you don't let it sit too long hahaha :) but man oh man it is worth it.
