Damiana is great. I take it in pill form and I have great energy for my cardio workouts. Yes, it is definately an aphrodesiac. I also bought it in herb form at a health food store to smoke it. It's not nearly as potent as marijuana, not even close. But talk about happy and relaxed! It only last 1/2 hour or so. I would never consider smoking it mixed with chemicals like this "Spice" crap. My husband is a fireman and they have been on calls several times to people smoking that crap. Plain damiana leaf. Good enough!

I was told by my son about this herb.  He told us he had stop smoking "POT" when he found this herb.  He said "mom just watch" he rolled it up and smoked it and now with my own eyes my son was high as a kite for about a half hour and just so funny.  Now will everone have the same effect, well I don't know, but I am glad he is off the illegal dope!

Hello to any and all idiots who smoke this or any other ingredints in spice this is not regulated by the FDA and is not intended to be ingested. people have had seizures and died my son may go to prison for this legal herb. I know all of you who smoke it say that you do it because it helps you with your anger issues, Im a nurse and I suggest that you get on an antidepressant, you think this is safer than that and non of you are going to listen until you cant listen because DEAD people dont hear a whole lot just a friendly warning take it for what its worth ohh perhaps you should try smoking some nail polish remover because I was told that it was an ingredint in spice. ENJOY

First things first, if you want to make an argument, try proper grammar if you want to have any credibility. Secondly, you cannot come on a website and randomly suggest someone go get on a bunch of chemicals they don't believe in for a diagnosis you know nothing about. Many of us are sick and tired of being over medicated or mis medicated and are trying age old remedies and holistic ideas. Mind your business unless you care to share how in the hell your son managed to be dumb ass enough to get arrested over a legal herb. Being a nurse, you might want to educate yourself more...

You state this is not regulated by the FDA.
That's a GOOD thing, if you had intellect.
Did you know, the FDA legalise ASPARTAME, known in numerous scientific studies to cause brain tumours in mice?
So go and have some aspartame, if you believe everything the FDA dictates!
Stick to your antidepressants lady, and let's see where that'll get you too.
Thank you.

You need to understand what your're talking about before you speak.  This plant like many many others has unknown pharmacological properties when smoked or otherwise ingested.  The FDA cannot possibly look at every posible herb/plant out there.  Historical use is often a good indicator of safety and even efficacy.  And remember even water is dangerous when ingested in large quantities.

It may be one of the ingredients in spice but it is not spice. I am also a nurse, please do more research. Have you read all the side effects of antidepressants? Let people make their own choice and let the chips fall where they may. Fate is written. PS: Smoke nail polish remover? That statement removed all credibility. Next time come back with facts!

I'm a new user of damiana and have been amazed at how the dark cloud of depression has lifted. I have more energy and feel much more cheerful. I've been on a combo of anti-depressants took a few weeks to become effective and then became in-effective after a while. I am waiting for my first package of leaves so that I can make tea. Have also quit smoking cigarettes & marijuana during this period of time. Tea will be a nice option and hopefully it will have the same effect.

Stick to you pharmaceutical knowledge lyndy...your really the idot here my dear...study herbal treatment before your go mouthing off about things you know nothing about...and if your son is in jail, you better check yourself...do you cook and ingest spices? Get some knowlege, do your homework before you tell others what to do...how many patients died in your hospital this year from meds???? At least, and it is documented, 250,000 die every year from doctor prescriptions...just do your research before you make comments about something you know nothing about...

I agree that "Spice" is bad for you because of the synthetic THC that's in it. But as far as saying that a prescribed anti-depressant is the greatest thing, is so far from the truth. Hmmm... how many prescribed anti-depressants have a warning about "Suicide!". Yes, not only will the prescribed anti-depressant will kill you, but that it will help you kill yourself. I know this from years and years of experience with very many different prescribed anti-depressants from doctors who think they're God's gift to the world. Their failure rate is greater than their success, but I bet you anything their wallets are very fat. So why not try something that you have control of and is natural with less side effects than the synthetic, prescribed, pharmaceutic anti-depressant. Damiana is ok and legal liquor is deadly.

As has been mentioned, "spice" has other chemicals in it. This is not "spice", as it is just an herb by itself.

Also, if antidepressants are so safe, why did they land me in an emergency room twice in a semester?

It seems to me that we have a few options for this self-medicating herb. I see a few angles here. I like that using this herb in its natural state will bring a calming effect. That calming is why I smoke weed to begin with. I don't really want to be stoned, I want to be calm.

Another poster mentioned getting an anti-depressant. I have tried them all. I didn't get what I needed. Xanax was the closest I have been to calm without being completely dumbed down.

To each his own, but thank you for some of the very well thought out responses in here.

Herbs and drugs are one in the same, often times a herb can be as effective as a normal medicine the only difference being that a herb doesn't have a corperation that owns it.

On top of this, many drugs are made by accident and their effects become known 5 to 10 years after they begin killing people from brain or heart damage. I think most people can name two or three cholesterol or blood pressure medications that were "Safe" and tested by the FDA so please excuse us for not thinking that the FDA protects us and keeps us safe.

For a nurse, I think your grammar is terrible. You're posting as an alarmist, not as a friendly warning.

Just a final case and point, horny goat weed is about 70% of Pfizer's Viagra formula and that is exactly why Pfizer could not get a full patent on the drug. Herbs are not mumbo-jumbo, their main issue is they're never fully understood because drug companies cannot patent something from nature so they don't invest in testing the safety of something they cannot market and have a monopoly on.

Firstly, calling people idiots for ingesting something that has been safely used in S. America for thousands of years isn't going to win over any friends. We're talking about Damiana, NOT Spice. Get your facts straight. For your information, Damiana appears on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) GRAS (generally recognized as safe) list and is widely used as a food flavoring.

Next time think before you come in here and start spewing negative and incorrect nonsense about something you know very little about obviously. Now who's the idiot?

You don't have a clue about what your talking about. Because your a nurse you think your opinion matters more? You should do more research. I've been using 'spice" on a daily basis for over a year and except for the third arm, it's great. Also I suggest you use the spell check.

Antidepressants! Safe? You need to look at the "current" evidence against taking these!
Wv2patty's avatarWv2patty
I'm a nurse, too but that hardly gives the FDA the right to get in bed with every drug company there is to make billions on pushing their synthetic chemicals that are proven to KILL people day-in and day-out.  If you're truly a nurse as you claim--then you should know that better then anyone.  That is, unless your one of the Little Play Nurses (LPN's) who's clinical knowledge spreads no further then doors of a nursing home.
T Delish's avatarT Delish

Number one, if you are a "nurse" you have no right prescribing anything.  Number two, acetone evaporates into nothing and is used as a vehicle.  Book smart, no common sense.  Just like your son, apple does not fall far from the tree.

Kewlwaters's avatarKewlwaters

Lyndy, I simply can't find any credibility to anything you have said. Truthfully, I doubt that you are a nurse at all, perhaps a nurses aide? Nurses are trained to not make such statements without empirical knowledge.  Your comments about the brand "Spice" has nothing to do with reviewing the Damiana on its own merits. Could you perhaps study Damiana itself and then comment with something knowledge based? We'd all appreciate it.

always enjoyed smoking a little pot, this is not like pot. yes it lasts about a half hour. Be careful smoking this. I took a (big) hit, and was having a bad experiance' kinda like tripping kinda like pcp effect. I felt paniced for a while. everything seem enhanced (brighter), then i started sweating and got pale looking, felt close to passing out. i wanted to not be feeling this way and wished it was over. This all took about perhaps 10 minutes after smoking it. first time first effect maybe too much. i'll try just a few flakes next time for sure as i really didn't like the panic feeling.

...sound's like you smoked what is called "spice". Damiana on it's own (in natural form) should not produce those kinds of effects. Spice is typically the Damiana leaf tainted with synthetic cannabinoids (K2, JW-XXX, etcetera). It's very bad for you, and can be fatal. Don't smoke that shit. I believe it's been made illegal in most of the US and the UK. Stick to the natural herb, don't purchase it from a "bong shop", go to a natural herb shop to make sure you're getting Damiana that isn't laced in dangerous chemicals.

I've been smoking damiana for a few weeks and its great for relaxing. I don't like cannabis as I find that far too strong. Damiana doesn't give you a high as such, it just chills you out. You feel otherwise normal, remaining coordinated etc. I suffer with mild anxiety and I find this a great relief. I haven't noticed any libido increase but that hasn't been an issue for me anyway. I smoke it in a vapouriser so it isn't harsh on my lungs. I might try the tea as my wife has been so brainwashed that she would get very scared if she saw me smoking green herb in a vapouriser. I smoke it in the garden shed without her knowing!

I am planning to give Damiana a try for libido. I'm 43 now, and ever since I was forty, I have had a hard time trying to get the desire to do it with the husband. After numerous housework chores and their mundane boringness, I'm just too mentally drained to do it with him. It's like is this yet another chore to do? Oh, I just can't, I'm just too tired, let me have a nap first, how 'bout some other time? I'm just sick of making lousy excuses to my husband who I have loved for13 years, and I'm sure he's sick of my excuses too. Does anybody know if this Damiana stuff helps you do it or not? I'm sure willing to try.

Hello , I noticed a significant improvement in my overall energy levels after drinking 2 cups of Damiana tea for a week from the dried leaves , with a drop of lemon juice and a spoon of honey to sweeten it . I tried Damiana because I was stressed and tired and my energy was depleted, causing the same problems you describe in your relationship , I had no interest in anything really , and it certainly helped to give me the boost I needed .

The FDA is in place to protect CORPORATE interests...not the safety and interests of the people.  Hence GMOS in our food supply and neurotoxins (flame-retardants) in our children's pajammas.

FYI for depression sufferers:  In Europe, Omega 3 is prescribed as it has been shown to be more effective than Prozac in treating depression...not just minor depression, but deep depressive disorder.  When purchasing an Omega 3 supplement, be sure to get one that is not heated in the processing. Heated oils (other than coconut) become toxic and release free radicals.  Flax seed oil, or an omega 3 made by super-critical processing is a good source.

Why does everyone judge herbs so harshly, they are given to us by GOD to USE...      they are far more superior than the trash drs. are so fast to hand out,  with most all having terrible side effects, why do this to our bodies, the olive leaf is spoken about in the bible for all healing of our nation, what could be better than that....I WILL BELIEVE IN GOD NOT DRS.Like they are god and are the final word..they are not..

Careful smoking this stuff. A little goes a long way. It's like taking psilocybin. It can be utterly fantastic and deeply spiritual, but also has the potential to turn bad very easily. My husband can't handle it. And only because I've dealt with bad trips in the past was I able to bring myself down. One small hit will last 30-60 min. and thank goodness! This stuff can be really intense. I don't know why so many think it's not as strong as mj. To me it's far stronger. But everyone's different. And there really isn't enough medical info on it for me to feel ok about saying try it or don't. If you're thinking of trying it just be careful. It would be terrible if some idiot got themselves killed and then another medically beneficial herb gets banned in the US.
